WebIrma Lerma Rangel was not a woman inclined to let obstacles slow her down. In the 1960s, the Rio Grande Valley native and language teacher decided to earn a law degree—despite the noteworthy “handicap” of being a Mexican-American woman in her mid-thirties. WebIn the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, Emergency Managers looked at the challenges faced during the storm and found areas for improvement. Some of those challenges included evacuation procedures, staffing at the Emergency Operations Centers, slow debris removal times, and prolonged power outages.
WebIn 1947, when Rangel was a teenager, her parents were able to buy some land near Texas College of Arts and Industries and hoped to build a home. WebIn 1975, Chicana members of the Texas Women’s Political Caucus urged Rangel to run for the Legislature and helped fund her campaign, as did female farm workers. She defeated an opponent supported by the powerful King Ranch and served in the House for over 25 years. WebIn 1976 Rangel became the first Mexican American woman elected to the Texas House of Representatives. During her time in the legislature, Rangel focused on education, women, children, and the poor. She supported laws that helped mothers and victims of domestic abuse. She also served on the House Committee on Higher Education.
