My recommendation for a first dirted tank is buying an organic top soil and doing a very fine gravel cap. Then you can see what you do or don't like about it and make changes for the next tank you set up. WebPut in the dirt and cap it with a thick layer of whatever you want to, add plants, hardscape etc and fill it up slowly. Since the filter has established, the tank is ready for fish being slowly introduced. With a thick cap, the soil shouldn't come up due to fish digging out up.
